06/02/08 - Surface Technology for Titanium

Titanium is increasingly used for high-quality, functional applications. Like stainless steel, a suitable final surface processing is decisive in the case of titanium materials with regard to their later success in use.

POLIGRAT offers a complete range of chemical and electrochemical processes for the surface treatment of titanium which is adapted to suit the specific use in each case. All processes are free of nitrates, safe in use and controllable. They do not produce hydrogen with the associated feared risk of embrittlement.

Specifically, these processes are as follows

  • Pickling with POLINOX-TB 100 is free of nitrates and attacks the surface, removing it at the rate of approx. 1μm/min. It works at room temperature and produces attractive, light silvery surfaces with a silky sheen.
  • Chemical polishing with Tichem-T 100 is a simple immersion process that delivers shiny, smooth and burr-free surfaces of high quality. It is especially suitable for the processing of small parts in bulk such as screws, springs and stamped parts as well as the inside of drillings.
  • Electropolishing with the POLIGRAT process E 398 results in high-gloss surfaces which are of top quality as regards purity, cleanability, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility and passivity. The surfaces are free of burrs and particles. The process is safe and stable in use, and rather like the electropolishing of stainless steel it can be applied to a similar range of parts. It contains no fluorides or acids of halogens and is suitable for all titanium alloys including nitinol.
  • Colouring and anodizing using the Titancolor-2 and Titancolor-G processes.
  • Titancolor-2 produces a dense, transparent oxide layer of controlled thickness on the titanium surface by means of electrolysis, considerably improving the corrosion resistance. Depending on the thickness of the layer, a series of attractive colours are produced on titanium and titanium alloys through light interference.
  • Titancolor-G produces dense, light grey ceramic layers of titanium oxide through plasma discharge. These are considerably thicker than those produced by Titancolor-2. The layers are very stable both mechanically and chemically; they do not conduct electricity and they demonstrate good lubricating properties.
